Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246)

The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) is an unusual camera in a number of ways. Top of the list is that it can shoot only black-and-white photos. Next up, it costs £5,750. And finally it's a rangefinder, which when used alongside the viewfinder, offers a...

Excellent build quality ; Stunning photos and good high ISO performance ; Great handling

No autofocus ; Feature-poor ; High base ISO

Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246)

The manual focus, black and white-only Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) rangefinder camera isn't for everyone. But if it's for you, you'll love it.

True black and white image sensor. Live View with focus peaking. ISO 25000 support. Sharp rear LCD with sapphire glass cover. Bright optical viewfinder with rangefinder patch. Brass and magnesium construction. Dust and moisture resistant. Includes...

Expensive. Video features could be better. A little slow to start. High base ISO can be an issue in bright light.

Conclusions Technical reasons aside, there's also a certain mindset that goes with picking up a camera that shoots only in black and white. Sure, you can set your SLR or point-and-shoot to capture monochrome images, but the temptation is always there...

Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) review

Leica's black-and-white-only rangefinder camera gets an upgraded sensor, screen and processor

Clean, detailed and finely textured images ; Rugged build quality and a wonderful feel ; Big viewfinder with easy rangefinder system ; New screen, and live view in a rangefinder

Limited dynamic range ; Metering leaves highlights burned out ; Awkward exposure compensation button ; Frame guides aren't always accurate

The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) is specialized and expensive, and its manual rangefinder focusing won't suit everyone. But the quality of the results justifies Leica's brave decision to use a monochrome sensor.

Leica M-Monochrom Hands-on Preview

Leica has long been a manufacturer happy to exploit niche markets - its M9 may be a fascinating camera to shoot with, but the company's adherence to the near-obsolete, manual focus rangefinder design, coupled with its distinctly exclusive pricing...

Leica M Monochrom Review

Leica returns to its roots with the new M Monochrom, a full-frame digital camera whose sole purpose is producing beautiful, clean monochrome images without the impediments of color. The impediments of color? We'll get to it in more detail soon enough,...

Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) Review

In mid-2012, Leica announced perhaps one of its most unique digital cameras to date. The Leica M Monochrom took the body of the M9-P, and swapped in a full-frame CCD image sensor that lacked a color filter.

Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) Review

We review the brand-new Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) with a new 24 megapixel black and white CMOS sensor.

Full-frame 24megapixel black and white CMOS sensor ; Live view and focus peaking ; Monochrome FullHD video recording ; Impressive resolution and detail ; Unique black and white digital rangefinder ; High ISO noise performance ; Adobe Lightroom included...

Cost - although could be justified ; Rangefinder with manual focus and aperture

The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) will be a welcome update to those who want to shoot in black and white, and uses the Typ 240 camera body to bring all the latest features to the monochrome camera. Improvements include a high resolution 3 inch screen,...

Test: Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) (Profi-DSLM)
